In Loving Memory of Chance (Age 15½)
Chance’s story began in Louisa, Kentucky, where he entered the world and was rescued by our family soon after. He was found lapping dirty water from a crack in a Speedway parking lot, covered in motor oil, mange, and mites, but never without spirit. From the very beginning, Chance proved that resilience, love, and joy can rise even from the harshest of circumstances.
Chance spent his early years in Kentucky, proudly patrolling the streets of Louisa and never meeting a stranger. He was a familiar and beloved presence, keeping Conner in line, and greeting everyone he met as if they were an old friend. His curiosity and confidence were matched only by his enormous heart.
His journey continued as our family moved to Northern Virginia, where Chance embraced his next chapter with the same enthusiasm. He delighted in chasing squirrels, meeting up with his neighborhood friends, and welcoming visiting family and friends—who he somehow always knew were coming just for him. He could often be found sleeping faithfully outside the guest room door, standing guard with quiet devotion.
In the later years of his life, Chance found a new kind of joy when our family purchased a vacation cabin in West Virginia. There, he reveled in exploring the rocky terrain, eagerly searching for groundhogs, and happily drinking fresh river water straight from the source. Those peaceful days in the mountains were some of his favorite, and they gave him the freedom and adventure he so deeply loved.
Chance was a loyal and constant companion to Phil, Beth, and Conner. In his younger days, Chance proudly coached Phil through several academies, faithfully running alongside him and keeping pace during countless miles. When Conner was home, Chance could be found tucked away in his room, playing games, sharing snacks, and soaking up every moment together. When Conner left for the Marines, Chance gracefully adjusted to only-child status, helping Beth and Phil navigate life as empty nesters. As the years passed, their rhythm slowed, and Chance found just as much happiness taking it easy—curled up on his favorite blanket on the couch, sharing quiet moments and naps with Phil.
Chance was a true family dog—never belonging to just one of us, but somehow loving Phil, Beth, and Conner equally and completely. He had an uncanny ability to adapt to each of our quirks, anticipate our needs, and quietly show up as our most loyal companion. Through the lowest of lows and the highest of highs, Chance remained a steady presence in our home and hearts. He walked alongside each of us through so much of life, offering unwavering love, comfort, and support. It’s hard to imagine any of those seasons without him, and we are forever grateful for the constant, gentle love he gave our family.
Last October, Chance proudly stepped into one of his most cherished roles—as Conner became a dad, Chance warmly welcomed Belèn into our family. She was instantly mesmerized by the fluffy black-and-white puppers, and Chance, ever patient and gentle, would quietly sit as she reached out to pet him. Their bond was tender and unspoken, a beautiful reminder that Chance’s love spanned generations.
Through COVID, Phil’s many work travels and Conner’s transition into adulthood, Chance became Beth’s most steadfast companion and best friend. He never missed a chance to share dinner—especially if it involved her nanny’s beef stew or peanut butter no-bakes. Odds are, if you ever ate near Chance, you shared your plate with him too. With his relentless determination and those unmistakable big eyes, Chance had a way of convincing everyone that he was absolutely deserving of just one more bite.
Though a distinguished gentleman, Chance could never deny his beagle bloodline. He had a legendary talent for discovering the occasional treasure in the trash, a thrill he clearly considered a rare and exciting victory. Chance also possessed a deep, unforgettable hound dog bark that brought laughter to all who heard it.
Chance loved children with his whole heart. Even in his later years, he would still stop on walks to greet young children, soaking up their attention and offering gentle affection in return.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to Chance’s veterinarians, Lauren Mirus and Tim Roberts, whose steady care, wisdom, and compassion guided Chance through every stage of his life. A special thank you as well to his beloved Tutu, who was always standing by with the best advice—and all the goodies. Without their deep love and devotion, we know we would not have been blessed with so many years.
We hurt so deeply because Chance was truly the best dog. More than a pet, he was our bestest boy—our constant, our comfort, our joy. We will forever cherish the 15 years of memories we shared with him. Chance made our lives better in every way, and forever still wouldn’t have been long enough.
At the Rainbow Bridge, Chance was joyfully greeted by his cousins, Tucker and Huck. Until we meet again, sweet Chance—you will always be loved, always missed, and never forgotten. We will carry your paw prints in our hearts forever. 🐾❤️
